Names

I have been planing my children's names since I was about 12. Or 9. Actually I might have been 7. Anyway, it has been a long and tricky process with much switching around and many eliminations. The one trend I have discovered over the years is that I like names that most people don't particularily like; or, as my mother likes to remind me, are not actually names [for the most part] at all. I used to have middle names along with the first names, but more recently I have been focusing only on frist names.

This is the list of my babygirl names:
-Lavender
-Honey
-Currant
-Angelina
-Jade

I am aware that the last two are fairly popular real names. I just added those two today. I figure they still fit with an overall theme and are more likely to appeal to my mother. And, let me add here, Lavender is a REAL name which has been used in TWO popular childrens books. Harry Potter and Matilda.
The theme I have come across is one of love and nature. Lavender for flowers. Honey for sweetness, Currant for summertime, Angelina for the spiritual, and Jade for preciousness.
I think its adorable.

words

think of a random word.
i think: soul
then i half-think 'chocolate' and almost vomit. my shirt is tied too tightly around the middle and it feels like a vine creeping up my throat squeezing chocolatey bile out of the top.

goldfish

my co-workers are fish. they glide past me in the blue ocean mouthing bubble-greetings, bug-eyed with apprehension and with attention. i stare them all down, individually. no blinking.
the glass bowl works to my advantage, as do their 3-second memories. they are not aware. my unexpected wrist easily stirs the surface and my submerged hand scoops them from behind.
my clumsy three year old fingers transport it across the kitchen; un-learned, they separate and the fish flips itself to the floor. i am terrified by its propelling powers and abandon it on the tile. i pitter-patter down the hall screaming for my mother.

"You look so pulled together, its like 90 degrees outside already."
Thats what I like to hear :)

My Favorite Sandwich

This is my favorite sandwich. In. The. Entire. World. It is from Brioche Dorée, a Bakery/Cafe in France. It is called LE GRAND TOASTÉ VÉSUVIO and is composed of Fromage de chèvre, Mozzarella, Tomates marinées et Tartinade à la Provençale.
Simple, classic, and to die for.
The Macarons made me think of it. MMMMMMMMMMMM :)

Macarons!

One day while I was was living in Paris I was at the bakery buying bread and my gaze fell upon some funky colored, tiny, hamburger-looking things. When I say funky-colored, I mean FUNKY colored. Bright yellows and placid greens, teal, neon pink. It was astounding, and slightly sickening. I had no desire to buy them, eat them, or even stammer through the necessary french to figure out what in heavens name they were. I pushed them from my mind and focused on remembering the name of my bread loaf so I could order speedily and not bring attention to myself. A few weeks later [maybe even a month later I am ashamed to admitt] I finally communed with these strange, but utterly delightful, little pasteries.
And commune I did. Upon first contact with my tongue my entire being rippled with ecstasy. I "MMMMMM"-ed like a 3 year old. The slight crunch, the sticky creaminess, the melting cookie, the kick of bold intruiging flavor, it became a part of me. There were three of us that day. Together we had bought a box of 5 at Ladurée and then taken them down the Champs-Élysées [do not tell this next part to Mme Welch] to McDonalds where we ate french fries [I swear this was the only time] cleared the table, and began our ceremony in a cushioned darker corner of the wanna-be posh 'restuarant.' We had gotten multiple flavors and this meant no repeats. So, we took turns taking the first bite and then passed the cookie around. Each girl had dibs on the first bite of her personal anticipated favorite flavor. I got lemon and, let me add, lemon was the winner that day. Photo documentation was taken of each too-small bite. Our faces, of course, were distorted in pleasure. We twisted, we melted. We shivered and sighed. And we were crippled with sadness that this was the end of our time in France. How in the world did we last this long without partaking of this precisely contained piece of Parisian perfection? This was France at its finest to me: classy, colorful, sweet and sculpted. As well as slightly stand-offish and intimidating.

My identical twin sister is leaving on a mission to St. Petersburg Russia this August for 1 1/2 years and I have decided that the only treat worthy of her departure is the macaron. [Both are obviously held extreemly high up in my book]. I have been researching food blogs and have come across many, many helpful people full of tips and advice and this weekend I am going to do my first practice round.

I plan to make lemon ones and raspberry ones will alternating fillings of lemon curd and raspberry jam. I will, of course, let you know how it goes!

Apparantly I do not have access to my own photos of Macarons while I am at work and so all these images are from the internet. :)

I forgot to list you some of the incredible flavors! Here we go:

  • Jasmin Mango
  • Rose
  • Blackcurrant Violet
  • Orange Blossom
  • Red Fruits
  • Coconut
  • Chesnuts
  • Spice and Soft Fruits
  • Lemon Cedrat

The Golden Orb

I have a new lover. A new obsession. A new desire. The Golden Kiwi. No joke, I am in loooove.
For those of you who have been living in the dark [as i was until i ate last night's fruit salad] and have yet to embark on the mystical experience that is The Golden Kiwi, let me describe. It is a kiwi, but on drugs. Nice drugs. Marvelous drugs. Wizard of Oz yellow brick road blissfull. I'm talking hammock in heaven. I'm talking glittering diamond tiara and rose covered palace. Alice in wonderland dream. Upon first taste i felt as if the golden orb of the sun had fallen from the sky and landed in my open, waiting mouth.
It is 'normal' kiwi, minus most of the tartness and plus sweet, sweet, tender lovin.

Can you hear it screaming "EAT MEEE!" ?

And so I begin again

this is my millionth blog. i tend to give up on things. and i like change. so i am starting over... again :)
